Bed Bugs & Lice Go To School
New Policies Have Parents in a Quandry
With school just a month away, you might be thinking of those back to school items, but I bet you are nothing thinking about how bed bugs are preparing for school. If you have kids in school, you will know that the Toronto School Board recently changed its policy on lice. Previously, if your child was discovered to have nits or live lice in their hair, you would receive a call and be asked to take your child home until the problem is cured. This can sometimes take days and weeks, depending on the treatment method used. I’ve had this call and your stomach drops when you hear the news. All you see is mountains of laundry and nit picking in the days ahead.
The new policy is that head lice are not known to carry any disease and therefore do not pose a health risk. The same could be said of bed bugs. Bed bugs do not carry or spread any diseases and are not a health hazard. They are annoying, that’s for sure.
My niece is a Grade 2 teacher and recently, a mother dropped off her child and advised the teacher that her daughter has lice. My niece was unsure how to proceed at this point. In Grade 2, there is a lot of time spent on the carpet with children sitting side by side. This is a prime time for lice or bed bugs to travel to another child. My niece didn’t want the outbreak to spread to other children, but she also didn’t want to ostracize the child by separating her from the group. In the end, she just had hope the lice didn’t spread on her watch.
